Govt. to launch energy sector plan

The Ministry of Finance will launch the Samoa Energy Sector Plan 2017-2022 today. 

According to the Ministry of Finance, with the rise in the cost of living and the continuous fluctuation in the price of fossil fuels, having sustainable and affordable energy is important for social and economic development. 

As such, effective planning and affordable energy, resources is a high priority and thus the vision for the new Samoa Energy Sector Plan is sustainable and affordable energy supply for all.

Assistant Chief Executive Officer and the Energy Sector Coordinator, Sione Foliaki said: “The percentage of fossil fuel that we consume is alarming but not only that, the emissions are harmful to the environment. 

“We therefore need to manage our resources through efficient use of energy and consumption as well as investing in cleaner, greener energy sources.

“The Samoa Sector Plan 2017-2022 will help pave the way for Samoa to have a sustainable energy supply that will enable energy independence through the utilization of natural and indigenous resources, making it affordable for all.”

The Plan was formulated by the Energy Policy and Coordination Management Division of the Ministry of Finance with the technical assistance of Ravinesh Nand of the EU-GIZ Adapting to climate change and sustainable energy programme on the basis of a consultative process involving key stakeholders, government agencies the private sector, civil society organizations, development partners and respective representatives from the community.
