Eighteen students from the Young Developers Society Business Class are heading to American Samoa for two weeks as part of what they are learning at the Self Reliance Centre at Pesega.

Self-reliance centre at Pesega is run by missionaries of the Latter Day Saints and it provides Internet access, mentoring, and other helpful resources to job seekers, self-employed, and prospective students.

According to the Secretary of the Young Developers Society Business Class, Neon Jairo Siaki, the trip’s aim to allow students to learn different kinds of businesses and negotiate prices of their companies compared to Samoa.

“This will also be helpful when we get back so that we could use what we have experienced to build our own self reliance businesses because not everyone can find a job easily,” she said.

According to one of the business teachers, Brother Pe’a, the trip will be very useful for the students.

“Hopefully this will be something that will be very helpful to all the young entrepreneurs here in Samoa so that they don’t think just common things but think of new ideas,” he said.

“The centre has been going on for about three years now and the number of students has increase and it is of all ages.

“The curriculum that we are using is set from the U.S.A. so we follow what their curriculum is and it has to do with the aspects of business finances of dealing with it.

“They learn how to handle their business finances and also personal finances and keeping the two separate and not together so that’s what we teach here.”

Ask how students apply in the centre Brother Pa’u said they just need to some in the centre and talk to the staff about what they want to achieve.

“We sit down and listen to the applicants and they guide them to what is best for them,” he said.

“Usually we always start with the English class and then to Computer because that is much needed here and the programme is open to anyone it is not specific for church members.

“Most people that come in here are members but recently there’s been a change we have seen an influence on non members so this is open to anyone who wants to come in here and learn.”
