The Apia Protestant Church is a special place two doctors will cherish for the rest of their lives. It was where Dr. Coleone John Uelese Vaai and Dr. Kamara Aniva promised to love each other for as long as they both shall live.

The vows were exchanged before families, friends and guests.

As doctors, Coleone says being in the same profession helps them empathize with each other.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer about their courtship, he said the proposal was made one early morning before breakfast.

“Not too fancy for a pair of busy doctors, well not fancy at all,” he said giggling. “What mattered most was her answer. She’s unique and I am very blessed.”

“She is one hard working lady, loving, very supportive, reliable, trustworthy, encouraging, intelligent, selfless, and an amazing attitude anyone would love.”

“She is also very talented in sports.”

“I’d say in the kitchen as well, but, I do better in that aspect,” he said smiling. “The fact that we are in the same profession makes life easier!”

“We would talk about difficult cases we come across at work and discuss what to do and what not to do.”

“We learn from each other. We make a great team both inside and outside of medicine, after all what is a marriage other than a commitment based on compatibility, empathy and mutual need fulfilment.”

Dr. Coleone says like every couple, they have their differences.

“However that’s what makes us even closer.”

He also shared about their first true loves kiss.

“It was a group of medical students having a night out one time after long hours of studying for exams. We had pork buns and soft drinks on the seawall.”

“Just relaxing and prior to this, Mara and I have been sending each other text messages and man weren’t we attracted to each other!”

“Anyway, I drove everyone home afterwards and so I drove her home last and when we got to her house, before she got out of the car, I stopped her for a second and we had our first kiss, it was magical. The rest is history.”

Their son Caleb Kirifi Jr. Alexander Tia Vaai was born on May 19, 2017.

“We know life will not get any easier, especially in our line of work, but we are ready to take on any challenge that lies ahead, with his grace and unconditional love,” said Dr. Coleone.

The bride is the daughter of Asuao Kirifi and Judy-Anne Pouono and the groom is the son of Lautimnuai Afoa Uelese and Heseti Vaai.

The wedding reception was held at the Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel Ball Room.
