The fire at Vailoa Primary School early this month has not dampened spirits with Principal, Lemafoe T Leituala, saying they are looking forward to the new academic year.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Lemafoe said although the fire was a tragedy and unfortunate for them, the disaster has compelled them to start the year with vigor.

“We will begin school at Matauaiga and Vaa’s residence in the time being, while the school will be under reconstruction,” she said.

The cost of the rebuilding programme will be covered by the firm National Pacific Insurance.

“I was told by National Pacific Insurance that the school will undergo immediate rebuilding. But we have also decided to seek other assistance,” she added.

While the rebuilding exercise has been catered for, students’ desks and chairs are the next items on the list and she has put in a request to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Samoa Stationery and Books and Systems Limited for assistance.

“Whatever can be donated is greatly appreciated by our school.”

A total of 181 students and eight staff attend the Vailoa Primary School.

This week the school sought approval from the Ministry of Police to begin clearing out the clutter and charred remains of burnt equipment in the offices and school library.

“We are well aware that the school has a smaller place to work with but our biggest concern is to have school ready for our students,” she said.

When asked about the cost of the damage and the reconstruction bill, Lemafoe said the school fire is still being investigated but they plan to begin classes with other schools on January 28.
