A teacher can change the world.

With that view, Tupuivao Kerisimasi, a 14-year-old student at Aana No. 2 College wants to become a teacher.

“I believe it’s a long way to go but my goal is to become a teacher. I want to change the world and make a difference.”

The Village Voice caught up with Tupuivao yesterday when he was walking home from school. He tackles the three mile walk every day.

“If only my family have enough money, I wouldn’t be walking home in the sun,” he said. “Sometimes it’s too hot, other times it’s raining but I have no choice.”

Tupu has been walking home since primary school.

He says he comes from a family struggling with money which is why he is motivated to study hard to become a teacher.

“Money is the solution to most problems because everything nowadays has to do with money.”

Tupuivao is the eldest of three children. He hails from Siufaga Falelatai.

He knows his parents struggle to put him through school.

“That’s why I need to study hard so I can realise my goal of becoming a teacher.”

And he can with a helping hand. He told the Village Voice his parents would be delighted if someone offered to sponsor his education.

Tupuivao told the Village Voice his mother works and their whole family depends on an income of just over $100 every week.

“Life will be so easy if everything didn’t relate to money,” he said.

“But I know that’s not the case. To be honest, I find it hard walking home and sometimes hungry but I believe in God. And I know through him I can realise my dream to become a teacher.”
