Slow down and stop stressing

Life is too busy.

And it’s killing so many people at an early age.

So believes 38-year-old Vaioleola Rene, of Iva, Savai’i.

Vaioleola believes we have become so occupied in life we don’t have time to look after our health.

So what’s his solution? Stop stressing, he says.

“Nothing is worth stressing about. We exercise but that doesn’t take anything away.”

One must stop worrying daily, he added.

“This is the problem nowadays, we get ourselves fit but we forget to let go of all the burdens. We continue to carry it everywhere.”

He said that the most common one is that people are worrying too much about the countless fa’alavelave we have.

“This is all because of the high cost of living. But, what else can we do, the government is holding everyone’s neck now. “

Vaioleola reminded about a line from the famous late Sumeo Siitia.

“When some fa’alavelaves come, duck and give it a miss,” he said.

“We need to slow down and take it easy.”

Missing a faalavelave will not hurt, he added, because there will be another one around the corner.

People need to concentrate on their families first.

“It’s all about money,” he said. “But we should take a step back and make the right decision”

What is that?

“We need to stop acting like we are rich but to make the right choices with what [has to] come first.”

And what does he believe is the root of all these problems?

“We worry too much about the small stuff. I’m not saying that those are not important but we have to understand that no matter what we have to remember we have to make the right choice and consider our priorities first.

And what does he think should be everyone’s first priority?

“Family,” he said. “We stop comparing ourselves to others - to think, or, she and he can do that, oh she’s rich, oh she’s got that and this - and that is a real burden to us and the world that we are living in.”
