Our Christian beliefs and democracy

Dear Editor,

The readers views expressed on the constitutional change with regards to Samoa being formally recognised as ‘ founded on’ the trinitarian biblical God are really challenging.

While God was parked in the preamble, it was not legally binding.

Putting it in the document is a way of acknowledging that we believe that this will be the best form of democracy, to take our nation forward and into the rather turbulent future.

In other words we adhere to democratic principals for our civil government which springs from God the ultimate law giver. Put another way, while we are created free moral agents, lets do unto others as we would love to be done to us as the bible teaches.

The trinitarian concern though is a subtle one.

While it may confuse, (and word trinity is never mentioned in the bible as pointed out by a reader) the bible is full of the trinitarian concept. Act 5:3-4 is calling the Holy Spirit God, Mat 28:19 is instructing to baptize in name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Even Gen 1:29 is also indicating a trinitarian God. The bible does reveal God as trinitarian, so acknowledging this as proposed in amendment should be ok.

Most non-Christian religions in Samoa except for Islam are peaceful from their core theology. (If Islam can turn off their outer jihadi and sharia law, then they can be considered moderate Islam and Islamophobia will vanish. The local imam has also flaunted on TV his ability to source millions of Islamic dollars, and the politicians salivating for this can be a treasonous problem.)

Historically, there is the prophecy of Nafanua, which instructed Malietoa that a head of state for his government will be from heaven.

Shortly after the arrival of Christianity in Samoa at Malietoa’s village, which has been taken as the fullfillment of the war-goddess Nafanua’s prophecy. Christianity was the start of peace among the warring factions of Samoan society and there was the eventual evolving of Samoa to what it is today with Christianity adherence the stabilizing influence.

Finally, keep in mind the constitution should be for Samoans, not foreign aliens.
