Secondary Schools Sevens rugby is back.

The Zone A Secondary Schools competition kicked off yesterday at Leifiifi College.

Aleipata College surprised the spectators and Zone A teachers’ committee in a dominating performance winning both divisions’ Cup finals of the Under-14 and Under-16 competitions.

And Leifiifi College defeated Avele College to claim the first prize of the Under 18 division final, 14-10.

Zone A Secondary School’s President, Fonoti So’onalole, who is also the Principal of Falealili College, he believes there is huge potential among young players.

“There are many raw talents we have seen so far from this tournament,” he said.

“This tournament has helped the Samoa Rugby Union to identify some of the young talents here to represent Samoa in age group National teams.”

Zone A consists of 10 Schools, but only nine Schools competed yesterday.

The Under-18 final match between Avele College and Leifiifi College was an exciting one.

Avele College gave away early penalties allowing an early try from Leifiifi College’s skipper, Steve Rimoni.

Avele College responded with a try of their own to narrow the gap, 7-5.

In the second half, it was Leifiifi who made the most of their opportunities with Rimoni scoring his second try to seal the victory.

Rimoni said he was proud of his team.

“I am very proud of my team,” he said. “We knew we will host the games, and we don’t want other Schools to come and defeat us on our fields.

“We played really hard throughout this tournament, it was really hot but we were on a mission and I’m glad we’ve come away with the victory.”
