Why the faifeaus should be taxed

Dear Editor,

Re: Church implores govt

This is a very unfortunate state of affairs with both groups.

I am not a supporter of the P.M and his Cabinet, but I support this tax if it only applies to the so-called monthly "ALOFA".

Any other monetary gifts they receive throughout the month "should not" be taxable.

We all know the Faifeau receives more from birthdays, weddings, funerals and other celebratory events throughout the month than what they receive from the Alofas. That is no secret to any of us and our culture.

I will share a story that was related to me by others in disgust on behavior of some faifeaus.

Several Faifeaus were having lunch at a small cafe. They were studying the obituary section to find out when and where funerals are scheduled for each weeks so they can make an appearance to collect an envelope and other gifts from the people that a mourning a love one.

This is one of the reason I support the taxation of faifeaus.

We can all argue that few of these men does not represent the whole, but it falls in line with my argument that any monetary collected by the faifeau outside of His monthly alofa shall not be taxed.

Their monthly alofa is easy to track. Some churches are much smaller but the faifeau makes more from other methods including "asiasi" (Home visits).

Manuia le aso.
