A US$1million (T$2.3m) lawsuit from New Zealand-based lawyer, Leulua’iali’i Olinda Woodroffe, against the Samoa Law Society has been filed with the Supreme Court.

Representing Leulua’iali’i is lawyer, Leali’ifano Dr. Iopu Tanielu, while Semi Leung Wai is representing the Law Society.

Supreme Court Judge, Justice Lesatele Rapi Va’ai is presiding.  

Leali’ifano told the Court his instructions were to apply to amend a statement of claim made by Leulua’iali’i. 

He explained that when the first document was filed, the Samoa Law Society refused to respond.

But Mr. Leung Wai objected. 

He pointed out the statement of claim from the N.Z. based lawyer was difficult to understand and it was unclear. Hence they could not respond.

The lawyer said if the Samoa Law is served with a clearer statement they will be in a position to respond. 

The matter has been adjourned to the  3rd October. 

Leulua’iali’i is alleging a breach of her rights by Samoa Law by terminating her powers, privileges and responsibilities. 

The lawyer is seeking to quash the Society’s decision to terminate her unrestricted practicing certificate. 

She was issued with a restricted practicing certificate earlier this year. 

Leulua’iali’i is seeking general and exemplary damages of US$1million.
