Knocking out cancer

It is never about the money; it is about giving back to Samoa and loved ones who are battling cancer.

And the Pinktober season is still very much alive.

That being said, the Pound for Pound promotions has taken a step further in supporting this worldwide campaign by hosting their last boxing show for this year on Saturday 27th.

The majority of the proceeds raised through this event will be donated to the Samoa Cancer Society.

Pound for Pound organiser, Va’aiga Tuigamala says only a portion of the funds will be given to the Samoa Boxing Association to help the boys who will be competing in the Mini Games to be held at Vanuatu.

Big names in the business world such as Samoa Vailima Breweries (major sponsor), Island Rock (presenting sponsor) and Hyundai, TV1 (associate sponsors) have raised their hands to help address this killer disease and to  show support for those who are fighting the disease.

According to Sialii Vaiga’a, the Information Technology (I.T.) Manager for Island Rock, their company is thankful to Pound for Pound for allowing them to be part of this event.

Doris Tulifau, a member from the Samoa Cancer Society, also expressed similar sentiments.

“We are really grateful and honoured. It’s events like this that make sure that the awareness is out there. We need more local events, we need more local fighters,” she said.

Filemoni Pelenato, a representative from the Samoa Vailima Breweries, said they were honoured and privileged to be the major sponsor of this event.

He added they wanted to help raise awareness about cancer and also develop boxing in Samoa.

Seven amateur boxers will also be competing for a chance to represent Samoa in the Mini Games to be held in Vanuatu.

One of the amateurs whowill be competing during the event is Finau Loli.

Finau told Samoa Observer the main focus of the Boxing Association in Samoa is to take boxing up to another level because it was starting to drop off.

He added being a boxer, fitness is everything.

“It is not easy being a boxer, three minutes of running on the field is nothing compared to three minutes in the ring, you get tired easily. Boxing is all about fitness,” said Finau.
