Young man going back to school

Don’t be moved by your problems, but instead be led by your dreams.

That’s according to 17-year-old Fa’au’uga Tagi from Le’auva’a.

He spoke with the Village Voice team while returning home from his family’s plantation yesterday morning.

Fa’au’uga dropped out from school this year because of financial issues and he’s now ready to return next year.

“I know it’s not the end of the world for me and returning to school is a great reminder that I need to stay inside that classroom in order to reach my dream,” he said.

And his dream is to represent Samoa in international rugby.

Fa’au’uga is the sixth of nine siblings.

“I want to become another Alafoti Faosilliva,” he said.

“I mean I just love his skills and the way he plays and I feel I can do that too, but in order for me to reach that high, I need to go back to school.

“Because I believe sports has to go together with education these days.”

Fa’au’uga left school while still in Year 11.

“As I’ve mentioned earlier, I left school because of financial problems in my family, but I still want to go to school and I’m so looking forward to next year,” he said.

“My other two sisters support us financially and sometimes we depend mostly on our plantation and the sea, and these are the two main sources that help my family survive from day to day.

“But for now, I’m helping my family, especially my parents in doing the normal chores from day to day.”

He understands that education is important.

“I think, I’ll be back to school as soon as possible when we have enough money, and I’ll try my best to do well in school to make my dreams come true.

“I loved playing rugby and if I ever get the chance when I grow older, then I’ll go for it.

“Life is very hard nowadays, so I have to put my family first, my family is everything and I know that they’re the only people who can help my life and make my dreams come true.”
