A young man with a plan

It’s a typical story for many young people in Samoa.

They don’t plan to have families. Some of them just get into it and a few years down the line, when they get stuck, it’s only then they realise that they did not give the idea enough thought.

Johnny Maiava is a little different.

The 22-year old from Siusega and Faleapuna, who works at Maota-o-Samoa Gas station at Vaitele, is thinking carefully about the family he wants to have.

His ultimate goal is to one day raise his children and develop his own family.

“That’s my wish for the future,” he said. “But to get the dream, I know I have a job to do for my family and that’s why I work hard.

“At this stage, my family is very important to me so when it comes to my time to be a family man I know what to do very well.

Johnny understands the cost of living is too high.

But we cannot move away from this.

“Every family faces the same issue of the high cost of living but all we can do is to work hard.

“We cannot give up, we just have to try and manage.”

He believes changes and challenges are part of life but we must do the best we can to overcome it.

“Priority is family first, future will come and we will deal with it then.”

At the moment, Johnny said all they money he makes goes to his parents.

“I work to provide for my family. As a teenager I know very well what I should do, working harder to help my parents in caring for my family.

“The money I earn from my work is enough for my family for now.”
