The National Renewable Energy Day will be held at the Don Bosco hall, Salelologa, Savaii next week Thursday.

Organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (M.N.R.E.) through the Renewable Energy Division (R.E.D.), the theme is “Powering cities, towns and communities with 100 percent renewable energy”.

The initiative is part of R.E.D’s awareness programme in promoting the Government’s goal of using 100 percent renewable energy for electricity generation by the year 2021.

Electric Power Corporations C.E.O., Tologata Tile Tuimaleali’ifano said Samoa is currently running on 50-60 percent that is generated from renewable, proportionate to the diesel generator.

“Our main objective is to use non-renewable energy completely because using diesel generators to supply electricity is costly in comparison to solar plants. Minimise diesel and maximise solar and hydro.

“Becoming 100 percent renewable is a huge challenge and Samoa is leading the Pacific with the development of renewable energy.

“There is no other Pacific Island with a bigger solar production than Samoa. This also makes it difficult for us because there is no other country more advanced in solar power to assist Samoa in this area,” Tologata said.

Programmes on the day will include a 100 percent renewable city model design, science fair competition between seven colleges in Savaii - Mataaevave College, Amoa College, Palauli Sisifo College, Itu Asau College, Uesiliana College, Palauli College, and Don Bosco College from 9am-12pm.

This will be followed by a triathlon race comprising three different events - power walking, cycling, and wheel barrowing between 10 youth groups from around the big island to race through the selected route.

The 10 youth groups are Seventh Day Adventist Lano, Congregational Christian Church in Samoa Faala Palauli, S.D.A. Faga, Assembly of God Faga, A.O.G. Malae Faga, Methodist Satupaitea, C.C.C.S. Gautaivai, Methodist Sagone, Methodist Samata, A.O.G. Fagasa, and C.C.C.S. Auala.
