Whatever it is that you do, do it well and don’t give up.

The simple message comes from Ioane Manu’a, of Fausaga Safata.

The 40-year-old told the Village Voice that despite how hard life has become, love and care move mountains and people should be motivated by these principles.

The self-employed man said he used to have a job but he quit.

“This year is a new year for me,” he said.

“I stopped working because I think I can make more from the plantation and that is what I am doing.

“Also, I want to give my full support to my family by being there whatever time of the day. While I worked, I could not do that.”

Ioane said his younger brother works and provides for the family.

But he sees his role as complementary to the income his brother brings home.

“I realize the value of serving family is the best feeling a young person could ever have,” he said.

“It’s satisfying knowing that you are appreciated and whatever you do brings happiness to everyone.”

Ioane wants to remind the youth to obey and serve their parents.

“With so many of the youth around our country wasting time and causing trouble I want to say to just please make a change.

“Tafaigata prison is fully booked by so many youths because of the wrong choices they make.

“Change your ways and do something useful. Be the best at whatever you are good at.”

For Ioane, he wants to be the best farmer.

“That is my goal,” he said. “It’s hard work but I am committed to making it happen.”

As for life in general, he said everyday is a challenge.

“Life is starting to get a little tough for a lot of families here in the village,” he said

“Things are no longer easy and people are struggling to make ends meet.

“When people think village life, they think simple but that’s not the truth.

“I don’t want to talk about it because I know, you are aware about the life here if you don’t work hard you don’t eat.”
