Sustainable farming practices

Farming has been a source of hope for a father from Tanugamanono to provide for his family.

Foemua Faiilagi Saili Tanu’s farm was showcased during the strengthening Multi-Sectoral Management of Critical Landscapes (S.M.S.M.C.L.) for Samoa project.

He was one of the participants for Community Based Training (C.B.T.) on Sustainable Land Management Practices of farm landscapes for the 126 Apia urban and catchment areas, which Tanugamanono is a part of.

Foemua had provided a breakdown of his proposed farm plan and volunteered his existing farm to be used to demonstrate sustainable land management practices.

“I am truly grateful to the S.M.S.M.C.L. project for their support and assistance throughout the development of my farm,” Foemua said.

“It is with this farm that I am able to provide for my family not only through financial support, but also food supplies. I not only focus on yams, bananas but a variety of plants, like tobacco, passionfruit and cabbages. My own belief is that when one crop is no longer in good condition or edible, I could always use other crops,” he said.

The project has provided Foemua with different initiatives to assist his existing farm plan so that it can provide more yields and more importantly make it sustainable for his children and his grandchildren.

Through S.M.S.M.C.L., he was provided seedlings and farming tools such as spades, wheelbarrows and machetes.

The Project aims to help farmers around the country with sustainable farming practices.

Foemua plans to put to practice the technical advice and initiatives from the project.
