New beginnings are always challenging but exciting

The beginning of a new change in life is always the hardest so you have to be certain you’re in for the long run.

Ask 35-year-old Tapu Timu from Safata, Gataivai and Salelavalu Savai’i, and that’s what he will tell you.

Tapu was on his way home with two buckets of water over his shoulders when the Village Voice approached him.

“For me, getting water is not hard work,” he tells the Village Voice.

“If it’s free water from the village river then there’s no need to complain right?”

Tapu and his family moved to Upolu from Savai’i two years ago.

“That is the reason why we don’t have any water of our own yet; you know we are just starting to develop our family here.

“You might wonder why we still don’t have water within the two years we’ve been staying here and to be honest, it’s because all the money we get goes straight into renovating and developing our home.

“I’m married, we only have one son and we are staying together with my wife’s parents.

He added “My wife is the breadwinner of our family; she works as a nurse and I’m the one who stays behind to take care and maintain things at home.

“I don’t mind going all the way to fetch water because I know, we are working to get our own access to water and I believe we will one day.

“We have enough food; whether it’s faalifu taro, banana or even a loaf of bread, that’s food and we thank God for whatever we get each day to live by.

“I’m a hardworking person and I don’t mind doing this and doing that; you know it’s simple if you do everything with a positive heart.

“We might not have our own water yet but we have the river to depend on

“Our focus right now is our home to be better first before anything else because there’s a few of us living under the same roof.

“So when that is done and over with, then we will look into installing our own water.”
