The second Chinese Medical team has arrived in Samoa, with team members eager to start work.

The team is part of an agreement between Samoa and China, where China provides medicine, equipment and a medical team to help Samoa.

The second medical team comprises of: Dr. Zhang Jichang – cardiology, Dr. Mu Yan – dermatologist, Dr. Xu Feng – nephrologist, Dr. Xin Ding – ENT (ear, nose and throat specialists), Dr. Mei Xiang Lin – pathology, Dr. Zhan Peng – urology.

According to the team leader, Dr. Zhang, they have been in Samoa for a week.

“The first medical team has left Samoa last week and we had the chance to exchange a few conversations and advices before they left,” Dr. Zhang said.

“I am very happy and honoured to have the opportunity to work in Samoa. I think that my specialty will be of great service to the hospital because there are a lot of patients that suffer from cardiovascular disease.

“I have a lot of experience in treating patients with cardiovascular disease and I am also looking forward to working with the local doctors in sharing our experiences and knowledge to help improve our services to the people of Samoa.”

Another member of the team, Dr. Xu, specializes in nephrology.

“I specialize in the treatment of Chronic kidney diseases, such as the construction of vascular access for hemodialysis (include internal arteriovenous fistula and central venous indwelling catheter) and the treatment before hemodialysis.

“I also had the chance to work as a post doctor in America for two years and I am also excited to experience the challenges that Samoa has to offer.”

The team will begin at Moto’otua Hospital next week. During their six months in Samoa, they will also visit and help other hospitals.
