Leififi College has won the overall M.E.S.C. Inter Schools Weightlifting Competition. Seven colleges participated in this year’s competition including the Papauta Girls College and Faleata College.

The award for the Best Male Lifter went to Pelesasa Viavia of Faleata College who scored 305.04 points. The Best Male Team award went to Maluafou College.

The Minister for Education Sports and Culture (M.E.S.C.), Loau Keneti Sio, and the Ministry’s C.E.O. attended the event and saw the country’s aspiring weightlifters give their best shot.

Speaking at the end of the event, Loau congratulated the lifters as well as the students for their sportsmanship while acknowledging the Samoa Weightlifting Federation for their support in this year’s competition.

He urged the organisers of the event to ensure it continues and assured everyone that his Ministry will continue to support the initiative.

“There are lifters from last year who are in the junior elite squad of the Samoa Weightlifting Federation and that is something we are proud of.”

“This is by far the only sport that I see is on target for the South Pacific Games next year and I can see it through its results and preparations.”

“So M.E.S.C. is in full support of this initiative and come next year we will be having this initiative with the hope that more schools will participate in this event,” he said.

Samoa Weightlifting Federation (S.W.F.) president, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork, said he saw some real talent in this year’s school competition.

“It was a great initiative and there were a lot of students who came out strong during the competition. The girls were also involved and it’s just amazing of how far these kids have come because they have potential and hidden talents that were able to show during the competition.”

Going forward, Loau said the S.W.F. will get involved next year’s competition and the M.E.S.C. will get more schools to participate.

“We will make it as a highlight for the South Pacific Games to have a school competition before the games. We will take it out to the schools next year because we want more schools to compete.”
