The Ambassador of China to Samoa, Wang Xuefeng and his wife, Tong Xin, visited the Samoa Observer Newspaper Group’s headquarters at Vaitele yesterday.

Mr. Xuefeng met with Editor-in-Chief, Savea Sano Malifa, Publisher, Muliaga Jean Malifa and the Editor, Mata’afa Keni Lesa at the newspaper’s conference room.

During the exchanges, the Ambassador spoke highly about Samoa’s relationship with China, saying that “Samoa is China’s best friend in the region.”

He said his country appreciates Samoa’s loyalty as a friend of China.

“Samoa is the first country in the region to sign a diplomatic relationship agreement with China and that is something that means a lot to China,” he said.

“We also value the fact that the government of Samoa has adopted and has over the years committed to the one China policy.”

Mr. Xuefeng said China’s assistance through many different forms is his country’s way of reciprocating Samoa’s support.

“We cannot judge a friendship in terms of money,” he said.

In Samoa, China’s work is based on the needs of the people of Samoa, the Ambassador pointed out.

“So we talk to the government a lot,” he said. “We ask them about the priorities for the people of Samoa. That’s why we have done a lot of work on hospitals, schools and many other areas where Samoa needs help.”

Lastly, Mr. Xuefeng commended the work of the Samoa Observer in Samoa and all over the world, especially in producing the four-page China Today on a daily basis.

In response, Savea welcomed Ambassador Xuefeng to Samoa and extended the Samoa Observer’s heartfelt gratitude to the government of China for their assistance over the years.

The meeting ended with a tour of the Samoa Observer premises.
