Celebration at Vailuutai Primary School

Prudent spending and accountability of a grant has reaped rewards for the students and teachers at  Vailuu Tai Primary School. 

The primary school at Vailuu Tai celebrated the renovation of their school buildings as well as their new hall thanks to a grant from the Government of Japan.

During the celebration the treasurer of the Parents Teachers Association, Aiono Faavevela Aiono said the whole project cost $269,750.14.

“There is no programme under the JICA to build halls for schools however we are thankful to God that we were able to build a brand new hall for the students of Vailuutai Primary School through the grant that was given to us,” she said.

“Before the grant was given to us, there was an agreement signed between the Ambassador of Japan Tuimaugaoalii Kazumasa Shibuta and the President of the Vailuutai PTA. Togia Afasene Semau.

“This agreement was that three sections were highlighted for how this grant should spent The first section was the repair and reconstruction of the school building, the payment for the labor and also the payment for the audit.

“The whole amount of the grant was $123,028USD which is estimated to $312, 571.14SAT.

“So we took away the money that was needed for the carpenter which was $40,000tala and the audit was $2,820.40 and that left us with $269,750.14.

“The whole amount was used for the repairing and reconstructing of the school building as well as the construction of the new school hall.

“Today I am very happy to say that every single sene and tala is accounted for.”

She also took the time to acknowledge the support of the Ambassador of Japan as well as the Government of Japan for their support.

“Your Excellency the Ambassador of Japan, Tuimaugaoalii Kazumasa Shibuta we want to convey our sincere thanks because of what you and your people have done for us and our community,” said Aiono.

“Without your support, today would not be possible.

“The truth is words cannot express how grateful and thankful we are for your generosity and we applaud your continuous support.

“Our wish for a new school is no longer a dream but a reality now and so we want to say thank you so much.”

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi echoed the acknowledgment of the school to the Government of Japan for their support in the development of education in Samoa.

“One of the many important projects within the Government of Samoa is education because these students are the future of this country,” he said.

“The Government prioritizes education as well to ensure that school buildings are to make sure that students are learning in a clean and happy environment.”

 “I wish to thank Japan and the Government for your continuing support with the development of education in Samoa.

“We are indeed grateful that these facilities which will now serve our school children.”

Lastly he also acknowledged the Parents Teachers Association as well the village for their support.

“Projects such as these shows the unity within the village,” he said.

“It shows that you all had an input in the completion of this project so congratulations and malo lava.”
