The Matāvano Spring Pool at Avano, Fasito’o-uta was officially opened last weekend.

The $81,048.60 project was opened by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Dr. Sa’ilele Malielegaoi who congratulated the village for a job well done.

Village chief, Tuloa Fetufou Aiono, said the work was carried out in three phases.

“The first phase of the project is the sea wall,” said Tuloa.

“This is to protect the pool from the sea which cost $10,000USD ($25975.66) and we also had help from the Trans work Construction.

“The second phase is the concrete where the workers had to put a concrete walkway for the pool. And the last phase is to plant some trees around the pool for the environment.

The pool was destroyed by Cyclone Val and Cyclone Ofa in 1990 and 1991.

“So we thought that it was time to rebuild the pool because the supply of water is very expensive. We talked about it however we didn’t have the fund to do the project.

“However, one day the Prime Minister came to have to’ona’i here when he told us about government grants that can help with the project. So I went and put in an application to the U.N.D.P as well as the M.N.R.E. Small Grants Programme.

“In the request we also mentioned that the fale komiti needs to be built however, the grant was approved but it did not include the fale komiti.”

The village also contributed to the development.

The Women’s Committee of Avano donated $10,700.00, the Village Council $19,561.60, relatives of Ape, Leusogi and Folasaitu and their families in Australia who donated $1,500.

“So we would like to acknowledge all those who helped with this project especially the U.N.D.P. and the Small Grants Programme.”
