Junior hustles with his pork buns

Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

This old adage is what 21-year-old Junior Fa’auuga from the village of Faleasi’u knows and lives by every day when trying to help his family.

And it keeps him motivated when he goes out to sell pork buns (kekepua’a).

He was walking on the side of the road with a box of pork buns when the Village Voice team approached him yesterday morning.

“My pork buns are $1 tala each and that price never changes,” he said.

“Sometimes I sell cans of soft drinks but most of the time I choose to sell these because a lot of people love it.

“I know it’s an affordable price and people always buy what they can afford.

“I also need the money which is why I can’t go any higher with the price; all I need is to cook them well so that people continue to buy it every day.

“Personally, it’s better to have something rather than nothing.”

Junior said he sold about 50 pork buns every day.

“It’s fast money and selling pork buns these days is a competition,” he said.

“Sometimes I go to the Fugalei market to sell because there is also a huge demand for pork buns there.

“To tell you the truth, I do this because this is my way to help my family and so this is why this responsibility means so much to me.

He said his pork buns were always on demand and they would be sold out by the end of the day.

“I think I’ve been to a lot of places in town because I walk everywhere to sell especially in my village.

“I know the more places I go to, the faster my pork buns sell.”

He has a simple message for the young people in Samoa.

“We should make good use of our energy and strength for our family.

“Always remember we won’t always be with our parents and families forever and we are responsible for our own future and not anyone else.

“Whatever job you’ve been given, do it with all your heart,” Junior said.
