Minister refutes conflict of interest concerns

The Minister of Education Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio, has rubbished concerns of conflict of interest between the Pacific Games CEO and the marketing manager.

The Pacific Games marketing manager Philippa Matatia is the wife of the CEO, Falefata Hele Ei Matatia. 

Responding to questions by the Samoa Observer, the Minister said Mrs. Matatia is working as a volunteer for the 2019 Pacific Games 

“What conflict of interest? Mrs. Matatia is working on voluntary basis and her vast knowledge in marketing strategies is vital especially at this time, we are near the games,” said Loau. 

The Minister appealed to members of the public to support the Office leading into the games and not raise unnecessary concerns. 

“There is no conflict, that I can assure you.” 

When he was asked why the position was not advertised, he said that the games marketing manager works on a voluntary basis. 

“Mrs Matatia has experienced and she is working for free, despite that she works under her husband, she is not getting paid for her service.” 

Asked whether the Marketing Manager is involved in the decision makings of the Office the Minister said “yes”. 

“What its purpose of being the Marketing Manager when she can’t do her job as the Manager,” said Loau. 

The Samoa Observer reached out to Mr and Mrs Matatia for comments however to date there has been no response.
