St Mary’s celebrates Culture Day

‘Lest you forget your culture’, was the theme of Saint Marys’ culture day yesterday.

Held in the school compound, the four school houses – Aquinas (red), Depores (green), Orleans (blue) and Avila (yellow) provided a colourful display.

Each house took turns competing in the speech contest, dancing and other traditional performances -  wowing the crowd of proud parents and teachers.

Principal, Mrs Lorretta Ulugia told Samoa Observer that the importance of showcasing what the students have learnt is the drive behind the Culture Day and the school’s 60th anniversary this year.

“Letting them understand more about our traditional Samoan dance and way of living is also another thing that this Culture Day is focusing on,” she said.

“We want to thank the parents that always support their children and push them to learn the samoan way (fa’a-Samoa),

“The college is looking forward to continuing this celebration in years to come.

Parent, Taiva Lolagi said that she enjoyed the Culture Day.

“My favorite part is how these young ones performed the taualuga, with graceful movements of the hands and feet in unison with the music,” she said.

“We all know that the taualuga is the main Samoan traditional dance that is performed by a manaia or taupou…but these girls were really good.

“Thank you St Marys’ girls for the great performance today.”

Here are some photos from yesterday.
