U.S. Sports diplomacy brings golf pro to Samoa

The U.S. Embassy in Apia hosting Golf Pro Scott Puailoa over the next few days in partnership with Invest Samoa Golf.  

Well known as one of the elite mentors of the game, Mr. Puailoa is investing his time through golf clinics, academic talks, and coach’s clinics open to all you are willing to learn, with the focus of this year’s programme towards developing and fostering skills for junior golfers.

Before getting on the green Wednesday afternoon, Scott Puailoa had the honor to meet with the Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio.

Discussions revolved around interest in golf and how it could be a future sport for Samoan youth. 

Following the meeting, an ava ceremony was hosted by the High Chiefs of Vaimoso Village to honor Mr. Puailoa and the U.S. Embassy. 

The highlight of the day was the first golf clinic at Faleata Golf Course, with Mr. Puailoa being assisted by local golfers and members of the junior golf team. Nearly 60 kids of all experience levels showed up to learn from one of the best. The participants were eager to learn the basics of golf and parents gathered around in support.

The programme is part of the Embassy’s annual Sports Diplomacy initiative, to which experts in various sports are brought in country to share their expertise and experiences to athletes, coaches, parents and the general public of Samoa.

Mr. Puailoa began his career as a golf professional as a counselor and instructor at the Billy Casper Golf Camp from 1973-77 and was the UCSB men’s golf coach from 1978-79. 

He was the Director of Golf at the Valley Club of Montecito from 1979 to 2012. He was named the Golf Professional of the Year for the Northern Chapter of the PGA in 1991 and was president of the Northern Chapter from 1989-91. 

He is a member of the Quarter Century Club of the PGA of America.

Mr. Puailoa has volunteered his time for the Boys and Girls Club Golf Marathon from 1990- 2011 and is a current member of the San Marcos Field of Champions committee. 

He has also served as an assistant football coach at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School (1976), San Marcos (1977-93, 1997, 1998, 2010) AND Dos Pueblos (1996).
