In Samoa today, even if you work at the rate of $5 per hour, it is still not enough to match the prices of goods in stores.

So said Ioane Apineru from Leauva’a.

He told the Village Voice team yesterday that even though he has five siblings who work and help look after their parents, they still struggle with money.

“There are three of us who are working here in Samoa and another three abroad, but it is not enough because we have our own little families that we have to take care of as well,” the 23-year-old said.

The cost of goods, especially essential items is a huge challenge.

There is always help from all his siblings because he is the one who takes care of their parents, but the daily struggle for him never ends.

For two years he has been catching the bus everyday from Leauva’a to Vailoa where he works.

He says he and his wife are also expecting a child.

Ioane is aware that when the child arrives, there would be many changes that will be made in terms of budgeting.

“Having a child would be a blessing, but we all understand that there will be many things we would need to prepare before the baby is born.”

“A child grows and every time it reaches a new month, it means more shopping would be needed for the baby such as their clothes, not only that, but the equipments used to clean baby bottles and many more kits that the child needs,” he added.

Ioane concluded that he is thankful for the Chinese businesses in Samoa, but it’s always a pity when their products are not of good quality.
