The Australian High Commissioner Sue Langford and the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Finance, Tupa’imatuna Iulai Lavea signed a Direct Funding Agreement for the Samoa Civil Society Support Program (C.S.S.P) at the Central Bank building on Wednesday.

The agreement lays out the terms for Australia’s A$4 million ($7.6m) support to Phase 2 of C.S.S.P over the next four years.

The C.S.S.P is Australia’s primary programme of support to civil society in Samoa.

It provides a single point of contact for funding requests from civil society organisations seeking support for community projects and services.

Since its inception in 2010, the C.S.S.P has funded more than 327 projects to improve community water supplies, provide education and training opportunities, sustainable energy projects, income generation through agriculture and fisheries projects and improvements in health and community welfare.

A call for proposals will soon be made to civil society organisations to submit proposals for projects in areas including skill development, income generation, climate resilience at the community level and improving health services.

Ms. Langford said Australia is pleased to be able to strengthen civil society organisations through the C.S.S.P.

“Australia recognises the important role of civil society in providing services to support the most vulnerable in the community. Improving the effectiveness of civil society organisations makes a real difference to people’s lives.”
