Two students have topped a class of 16 students when the Confucius Institute at the National University of Samoa held its inaugural graduation.

The students Lenora Rasmussen, 18, of Vaoala and Faith Palolo Moananu, 18, of Vaitele were each presented $500 by the Chinese government.

Ms. Moananu who dedicated her achievements to her parents and her CI teachers, saying she always had a passion for learning new languages hence why she studied the Chinese language for two years.

“I see myself as a translator or a communication person for businesses or important conferences which we don’t have many people who specialize in.

“As I went along learning Chinese I learned that there was a future in being multi-talented in many languages in terms of opportunities and experiences to be learnt,” she added.

Ms. Rasmussen said she never thought of learning any other language other than Samoan and English, but the Chinese course has been eye opening for her.

“This course has allowed me to gain another interest in something new. Taking this course has made me want to learn more about it, maybe even talk to Chinese people from the shops around here,” she said.

Ms. Rasmussen also said her completion of the course will play a key part in her application for a scholarship in China next year.

“I would like to thank the teachers for helping us this whole semester for language and difficulties trying to pronounce the words. I’m very pleased and surprised with myself for coming through in learning Chinese language.”

The Chinese government prize giving ceremony was held at the Aoa Building in NUS.
