Matai titles bestowed at Fausaga Safata
Eight members of the Tunumafono and Laumatia family of Fausaga Safata were bestowed chiefly titles at the Meamoniga residence yesterday.
The titles conferred included Tole’afoa, Nonufuna’i, To’oto’ovao and Tauasamaiupolu.
New titleholder, Tole’afoa Sesilia Sagiao, said the occasion was a fresh start for her and her fellow title holders.
“I know for sure that this will not be easy but I’m thankful to God for the opportunity because without Him, I wouldn’t be here today,” Tole’afoa said.
“I will give all my best to try to serve our family, the village as well as the church in any way I can.”
She said being a chief is about keeping the peace and leading with love. She said there was many cases where chiefly titled have divided other villages and families.
“Being a chief is a calling,” she said. “It’s not something to show off that you have a high calling in your family or whatsoever.
“It’s a calling for us to humble ourselves in front of God and allow Him to guide us everyday.
“I’m sure my fellow matai will be keen to do the same for the future of our family here in Fausaga.”
The formalities was followed by a huge family feast enjoyed by everyone.
