A mother will always be a mother no matter what

Times and attitudes change but a mother’s responsibilities never do.

A mother will always be a mother to her children even if they become parents themselves.

So says Fa’afili Afoa from the village of Matatufu.

“At the moment I’m looking after my grandkids while my sons are away fishing,” she says to the Village Voice team.

“For me, I think every new day comes with a different outlook.”

“Sometimes If I have enough energy, then I do a lot of work.”

“If I don’t, then I just stay at home and spend time with my husband and my grandchildren.”

Fa’afili said she has only one child that works; she’s a police officer and she’s their main source of income.

“When she gets her pay, she always makes sure we get what we need. Our other source of money is from our pensions; me and my husband.”

“I don’t mind spending all that money on family because this  is a time to help each other out considering the cost of living is not as cheap as it was before.”

“The kind of mother I am, you know I tell myself that I’m always going to be a mother to my children, whether they have husbands and their own children.”

“Sure most of the time I see that they’re doing okay with how they handle their own families but if I see something that’s not right, I don’t hesitate to make them learn the right way by giving them a hiding.”

“An advice to all the mothers out there, teach your children while they are still young or before they have families of their own, by the time they get to live their own lives, they know what to do.”

She added “Everything is going well here in our village, nothing much has changed, as you can see, people stay in their own houses.”

“But I have seen many new things unlike back then when I was in my youth.”
