Mother faces more charges for baby's death

A mother accused of causing the death of her five-month-old baby who allegedly died while she fell asleep is now facing extra charges, the Supreme Court was told on Monday. 

Lotoleagaina Auapaau Lailoa was initially charged with negligence as a parent for causing the death of the five-month-old baby in April this year. 

In the Supreme Court on Monday, two additional charges were filed against her which include manslaughter connected to the incident at Faleasiu. 

She was represented by lawyer Lucy Sio Ofoia and has yet to enter her plea to the charges. 

Supreme Court Judge Justice Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma adjourned the matter until next week to allow the defence lawyer to obtain instruction from the woman on her plea. 

The mother was breastfeeding the baby and is alleged to have fallen asleep and woke up to an unresponsive baby. 

In another matter called in court for mention, a prisoner appeared charged with the attempted murder of another inmate. 

Elame Elame is serving time in prison and is alleged to have fought with his fellow inmate over a cookie. 

According to reports, the prisoner wanted the cookie for his own and ended up using a machete to strike the other inmate leading to serious injuries. 

The matter has been adjourned to next week again.  

Also before the Supreme Court was the 19-year-old that is charged for kidnapping a young girl behind the Friendship Park last month. 

The lawyer for the teenager was in Court and his matter will be called again on Tuesday this week for the counsel to be appear in Court. 

The 19-year-old is still in custody since the offending and no one from his family was in Court.
